Choosing to work with a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ is great first step in working toward achieving your financial goals. In addition to meeting stringent education and experience requirements, CFP® professionals are obliged to put their clients’ interests ahead of their own and to provide their financial planning services as a “fiduciary” and act in the best interest of their clients.

In order to obtain the CFP® designation, advisors have to complete comprehensive and integrated coursework that covers:

  • Investment management
  • Tax planning
  • Insurance and risk management
  • Estate planning
  • Retirement Planning and Employee Benefits

Completing the required coursework is only the beginning of the process.  Aspiring certificants must pass a comprehensive six hour examination covering more than 100 financial planning topic areas.  In order to pass the exam, test takers have to demonstrate their ability to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios that potential clients would face.

In addition to completing the required coursework and passing the exam, CFP® professionals are required to have several years of hands on experience delivering financial planning services to clients before earning the right to use the CFP® marks.
